MY HOMEMADE LAUNDRY POWDER RECIPE:

I’ve been making homemade laundry powder on & off since 2018. I buy the ingredients in bulk from a Bin Inn style store & while I started making it in my food processor I now use my Thermomix (see weight options for ingredients below if you have a Thermomix too!). I started making my own laundry powder for our clothes when I became conscious of what chemicals I was using in our home. I wanted to know what we were washing our clothes in & I immediately noticed a difference with my eczema when we switched! It's also very cost effective to make.

YOU WILL NEED:
  • 2 cups/550 grams of baking soda
  • 2 cups/550 grams of washing soda (powder form, not the larger crystals)
  • Half cup/150 grams of borax
  • One third cup/75 grams of liquid soap (such as Castile)
  • 20 drops of pure essential oil (optional). (I've used Lavender & Peppermint, Grapefruit & Geranium and also Eucalyptus & Lime before).
  • A food processor or Thermomix
  • Airtight container for storage.

HOW TO MAKE:
  1. Add the baking soda, washing soda and borax to your food processor bowl. Blend on medium speed until it’s all well mixed together.
OR if you have a Thermomix weigh ingredients in using scales then mix 10 sec/speed 4.
  2. Add in liquid soap & essential oils (if using) and blitz on high until liquids are well incorporated & mixture has no clumps. You may need to stop & use spatula to scrape down sides, then blitz again.
OR with Thermomix; mix 15 sec/speed 2 gradually increasing to speed 5. Repeat if necessary until there are no lumps.
  3. Pour mixture into an airtight container and use approx. 1 Tbsp per laundry load.

NOTE: Be careful not to breathe in the dust from the powders, especially the borax, while handling and mixing as like any fine powders these can be irritating to our lungs.
